X-Men 3: The Last Stand
I saw X3 last night, and I must say that I was very disappointed in the movie. It was not the way to cap off the series.
To avoid spoiling it for people who haven't seen it yet, I have done an extended entry, so click below to read it.
X3 has its strong points, it's funny, action packed and has a lot of comic to movie translation.
However, it also butchers the storyline and laughs in the face of a series that could still make good movies.
Director of the first two X-Men movies, Brian Singer, was directing Superman Returns, and was unable to direct X3; bad move there. They should have waited.
However bad the movie turned out, they did leave it open for a fourth movie; one with all the characters.
1. We never see Scott Summers (Cyclops) die.
Plain and simple, what we don't see we cannot hold true. The only evidence we have that he is even dead comes from Wolverine, who didn't even look around after they found Jean. The Uncanny X-Men Volume 1, #134 states that Cyclops survives his psychic "murder." And what happens in the comics can happen in the movies.
2. Jean Grey had become The Phoenix.
What do Phoenixes do? Die and rise from the ashes. It can be done theoretically on that basis alone. And who is to say, since her powers are unlimited, that she can't bring herself back from the dead?
3. Professor Xavier is not dead.
Staying after the credits prove this. He is at Muir Island with Dr. Moira MacTaggert and talks to her via telepathy.
4. Finally right before the credits it shows Eric Lensherr, alone at a chess table, hand extended towards a metal chess piece. As they zoom into the piece you can see it wiggle, and Eric smiles.
This shows that the "cure" isn't permanent.
I'm just saying that it was a crappy end to a great series. Now if they were to make a fourth taking those things above into consideration, and made a better ending. Then I'd be happy.
But ah well, no one listens to me anyways!
